Group Projects

Below are downloadable links to group projects I have worked on as an undergraduate and graduate student at UNC-Chapel Hill. In the project descriptions, I included details on what I contributed to each assignment. In many of the PDF files, I provided annotations that further elaborate on my contributions. The names of my group members have been removed to maintain confidentiality.

Raleigh TDM

This brief report reviews transportation demand management (TDM) strategies used in Seattle and London and uses them to advise Raleigh on policies to mitigate congestion.

What I contributed: Report design and formatting, writing revisions, and the writing of the Executive Summary, London Case Study, and Recommendations sections.

Unrealized Travel in Canada

This academic paper uses survey data from Toronto and Vancouver to predict the likelihood of experiencing travel suppression (i.e., not being able to travel when you would like to) based on built environment and demographic variables.

What I contributed: Cleaned survey data, generated summary statistics, performed binary logistic regression, and formatted results in appendix tables.

The Past, Present, & Future of Buffalo Planning

This paper provides an overview of transportation and parks/open space planning in Buffalo. Included topics are the city’s history, current policies and planning, the city’s bid for Amazon’s second headquarters, and planning recommendations for a sustainable future.

What I contributed: Authored several sections, revised and edited the paper, and formatted the poster summary.

Addressing Racial Disparities in Denver

In a series of three papers, our group investigated racial disparities in Denver pertaining to infrastructure, hazard vulnerability, education, and employment. Paper 1 reviews the history of Denver’s housing, transportation, economy, and environment. Paper 2 identifies and maps disparities, while Paper 3 provides recommendations based on gaps in current policies.

What I contributed: Authored all sections pertaining to the economy and employment, revised the entirety of all three papers for concise and consistent writing across group members, performed GIS analysis in Paper 2.

BioWork Economic Development Case Study

This case study examines the success of BioWork, a biopharma manufacturing workforce development program in North Carolina. Our group identified effective strategies used in the program’s development based on eight interviews with key actors in the public, non-profit, and private sectors. The report follows the format of Homegrown Tools, an online database of economic development case studies from small U.S. towns.

Note: The names of interviewees and quotations used in the report have been removed to maintain confidentiality.

What I contributed: Conducted interviews, authored the Outcomes section, revised entire paper for concise and consistent writing, formatted final report.

BMI, Social Isolation, & Emotional Support

This econometrics paper explores the relationship between body mass index and self-reported social isolation and emotional support using data from the CDC’s Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System survey.

What I contributed: Cleaned dataset with over 400,000 observations, selected independent variables for model, generated summary statistics, tested different models, formatted tables, visualized marginal effects authored and revised much of the final paper, formatted final presentation.

Franklin Street Bike Lane Analysis

This report follows up a study done by the Town of Chapel Hill to understand the impact of new bicycle lanes on Franklin Street, the main street of Chapel Hill’s downtown. Our group conducted a post-count of pedestrians and cyclists and compared changes with the Town’s pre-count that occurred before the bike lanes were installed.

What I contributed: Counted pedestrians and cyclists, authored the Methodology and Results sections, formatted tables, provided writing revisions.
